Production version of smart Concept # 1 is anticipated by patent images

When smart unveiled Concept # 1 at IAA Mobility 2021, it said it was close to production. In other words, that was already pretty much what the final car would look like. Patent images filed with EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) confirm that and show us what the company meant by “almost:” minor changes the EV will have.
The most visible are in the front bumper. While Concept # 1 only has a large front grille, the production version has two openings on either side of the grille for optimized airflow.

Now pay attention to the doors. The concept lacked door handles and tiny mirrors. The patent images show that the production crossover will have flush door handles and larger mirrors, installed on the metal part of the doors instead of near the A-pillar.

At the rear, the rear bumper retained lines similar to those presented by the concept. However, the recess for the license plate made it slightly different in production. VE. The charging port will be located on the left side of the car, under the C-pillar, in the left rear fender.

The dimensions do not appear to have changed. smart said the Concept # 1 was 4.29 meters (168.9 inches) long, 1.91 m (75.2 inches) wide and 1.70 m (66.9 inches) high, with a wheelbase of 2.75 m (108.2 inches). Although it is shorter than the second generation BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, it has a longer wheelbase, which means it should be more spacious. This is what platforms dedicated to electric cars allow.

Whatever its name, the production version of Concept # 1 will be the first smart product developed with Geely. The Chinese titan gave it its SEA (Sustainable Electric Architecture). Dirk Adelman, CEO of smart Europe, said the electric crossover will have a range of 430 kilometers (267 miles).

The new car will be made in China, specifically in Hangzhou Bay, Ningbo. This is where the two auto giants Geely and Daimler established their joint venture to take care of the smart brand. If we are to see this as the future of the brand, we will never associate it with small urban cars again.
