BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) – After an accident on West 14th Street, a Bradenton man allegedly chased the other driver in his car, then after they crashed, beat him and threatened to kill him.
According to an affidavit from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Christopher Lovell, 28, was driving the south block of West 14th Street in a red Toyota when a silver Volvo slipped out of the side of his car. Both cars stopped, according to the affidavit, and Lovell “walked up to ‘the other driver’ and started yelling at him.”
The Volvo took off, “hitting Lovell” and causing him a minor injury. As the Volvo continued south on 14th Street, Lovell got back into his car and chased them. During Lovell’s chase, the Volvo made a wide right turn onto West 30th Avenue from 14th Street, colliding with a car heading the other way.
After hitting the other vehicle, the Volvo “hit the crash barrier on the north side of the road” and came to a stop, according to the sheriff’s office.
Lovell reportedly pulled over right after the Volvo and pulled into the middle of 30th Avenue, got out of his car and approached the other car.
According to a witness, Lovell told the Volvo driver that he “should kill you for screwing my car”. The driver of the Volvo was slumped with his head against the roof rack on the side of his car, according to the affidavit. Lovell then began to “kick” the other driver “on the head against the pillar several times, then pulled” him out of the car, knocking him to the ground.
On the ground, Lovell continued to kick the other driver while saying “I should crush your windpipe” and cursing him while he was unconscious. Then he grabbed a bumper on the other car and started hitting the man with it.
Witnesses told sheriff’s deputies they needed to push Lovell back to prevent him from beating the still unconscious man.
The man “had serious head injuries and there was a significant amount of blood on the A-pillar and floor of” the Volvo, according to MPs. After reading his rights to Miranda, Lovell reportedly told MPs that he beat the man “because of the vehicle crash and he was hit by” the Volvo.
Lovell was arrested on December 27 and is in custody at Manatee County Jail on charges of attempted non-criminal murder.
