Automakers around the world have been feeling the effects of the prolonged shortage of microchips since pandemic-related shutdowns forced a disruption in the global supply chain. On top of that, Asia-based microchip producers have struggled to meet insane consumer demand for new electronics, which has been pushed back by the need for employees to work from home during the Covid crisis. -19. This in turn stifled the supply of automakers like General Motors and Ford Motor Company. Especially when it comes to high-margin, high-demand trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the 2021 Ford F-150.
While regular production schedules have resumed for automakers, chip suppliers still can’t seem to scale up their own production to keep pace. That said, Ford Motor Company managed to get what it needed in the form of a new supply of semiconductor microchips.
the Detroit Free Press initially covered Ford Motor Company’s announcement of a new semiconductor chip offering, meaning a considerable amount of unused 2021 Ford F-150 trucks will be shipped to dealerships.
Ford trucks are everywhere
If you’ve been tracking the microchip shortage, you’re probably familiar with the thousands of unfinished F-Series mics lying around. Even with more production shutdowns in April, Ford has been able to stockpile mass trucks in any space they will fit, bumper to bumper. The reader covered the progress of Kentucky Speedway trucks filling the racetracks, a view visible from satellite imagery in space.
the Freep covered another batch of trucks sitting in much of the Department of Public Works yard, just waiting to be finished. There is also a mass of pickup trucks circling the Dearborn test track. This expanse of “waiting areas” was populated with F-150, F-250 and F-350 outside the wazoo.
Influx of 2021 Ford F-150 trucks could drive prices down
The biggest problem for Ford is not finding places to store its vehicles. It’s been drought for dealers nationwide who can’t meet demand for the popular F-150 truck. They just don’t have any to sell. This will change very soon though. According to The reader, Ford’s top priority right now is getting the new microchips into trucks and getting them to dealerships.
This is great news for consumers of F-Series trucks. As the production ship fully recovers, we are going to see a change in the current auto market bubble. Prices for new and used vehicles have skyrocketed, with insufficient supply and high demand. As the amount of inventory slowly inflows, prices will start to drop. The Ford F-150, America’s most popular truck, will be a direct indicator of the soon-to-change automotive market.
